Boycotting GoDaddy…..

There is a lot of hubbub about legislation that is threatening online internet freedoms — SOPA – Stop Online Piracy Act. This is another lamely veiled attempt to control what goes on amongst the internet. While it pretends to be upright and wanting to protect copyrighted material, it’s actual application isn’t very well thought out (imagine that — coming from politicians) and it aims to more control rather than to actually care about the root cause of the issue. But I digress.

Many tech bigwigs such as Google, eBay, Yahoo, etc are against this bluthering legislation for good reason. However, many of them are very upset because one of their own, GoDaddy, is actually supporting SOPA. And there is quite a movement to actually boycott GoDaddy and not do any business with them.

Well, I say “It’s about time! Welcome to the bandwagon. What took you so long?”

You see, this blog used to be hosted by GoDaddy. When I started writing this blog over 7 years ago, I wanted to focus on writing, not the technical aspects of hosting, domain registration, DNS servers and the like. There weren’t too many easy choices back then which led me to GoDaddy. However, that was before the trampy, soft porn advertising that now oozes from what I now refer to as “HoDaddy”. And while my spiritual and family values have strengthened and grown more conservative, HoDaddy’s have become looser than a thrift store turtleneck.

Now please don’t paint me as some sort of prude. I can appreciate a beautiful woman and I know that sex sells. However, to dress down or nudify (is that a word?) women and parade them on a daytime or prime time broadcast during NASCAR or football insinuating nothing other than raunchiness, is crass. It makes the Victoria’s Secret and beer commercials look mild and tame in comparison. I guess to compete with “Jersey Shore” and “Desperate Housewives” this is what we as a society have devolved to. I’m sure others have spoken out about this and I am sure that HoDaddy will be bested and surpassed by someone else soon. But I don’t have to pay into it. And I don’t have to expose my kids to it on daytime TV.

So almost 2 years ago I decided to make my own personal dollars speak for me. I gladly departed HoDaddy and found a web hosting company that aligned with my values and morals. A friend connected me with one of their friends who runs American Discount Web Hosting. Dawn is the owner and not only provides a great value, but also has awesome customer service and practices the values and morals I cherish. She is a great Christian businesswoman and if you have any web needs I highly suggest you give her a call. Especially if you are looking at alternatives to GoDaddy , er, HoDaddy.

As for the rest of y’all technies, while you and I are not doing business with HoDaddy for different reasons, welcome aboard.

The full scam works this way: Unethical registration companies monitor the publicly accessible WHOIS database and obtain registrant contact information as well as domain expiry dates. Using the information, they mail (via postal mail, FAX or email) the domain Registrants an official looking document that looks like an invoice, months in advance of the renewal date, encouraging the Registrant to renew the name now to protect themselves from losing that domain name. When the Registrant thinks they have renewed the name by paying the invoice, the domain is most likely not renewed, but they have probably stated that it would not be in tiny unreadable type on the document. At this point a Registrar Transfer may be initiated to the unscrupulous Registrar if they are intent on obtaining control of your domain. If that fails because the domain is locked or because they do not have the transfer key, they may send you an email or another letter to let you know that it failed and would you please unlock your domain and give them the transfer key so they can complete the transfer and charge you outrageous renewal and registration fees.
So be careful how you respond to this type of thing. It could cost you your domain name. Check with your registrar to make sure your domain name is safe.
There are a number of ways to combat the practice:

* Make sure your registrar requires transfer keys. Without these keys, which can only be given to the registrant, a transfer cannot complete.

* Enable WHOIS Privacy. This is the absolute best protection, stopping the scam dead in its tracks as there is no way for the scammer to contact the Registrant directly.

* Domain locking. A locked domain can’t be transferred, again, preventing the scam from working.

* Make sure you know who your domain is registered with. OpenSRS is the registrar that American Discount Web Hosting uses. American Discount Web Hosting will never solicit you via post or FAX without your requesting it first.

* You may also check who your registrar is by visiting this link: http://www.internic.net/whois.html.  InterNIC is the governing body for internet names.  You can read more about them and thier functions on their home page.

So I am going along just setting up another WordPress site. I get to the part about testing the contact form to make sure it works then I register as a “normal” user to see what notifications are sent. After about an hour I notice that I have not gotten any emails!!! OH NO!!! So I go to the email provider I use and talk to them. Apparently when WordPress sends out an email it sends it anonymously and so it goes through the open relays for email. This gets the email subjected to every know issue that can slow down an email. If the open relay gets too full then the email services provider will flush it.  And yes that means just what you think it does. The emails are no more. As I have never had this issue before, I assume the open relay my provider is using is very good at handling its work load normally, but I would rather not experience this again.

So what to do? For most people this is an easy fix; simply tell your website to use SMTP authentication in your forms and scripts.  For WordPress I have started using the HGK SMTP Plugin. It is easy to set up and seems to be working very smoothly. There are several other very highly rated SMTP plugins for WordPress.

Feel free to contact me if you need some help on this.

Hello All,

I have come to the conclusion that while many would like to be able to maintain thier own sites, they have no clue on how to do it. WordPress lends itself very well to giving this kind of power to a site owner. However, there is still a learning curve and I would love the opportunity to help you learn. It does not take all that long and my rates are very reasonable. Give me a call or send me a message and we can schedule you for your personal tutoring session soon.
