What is WHOIS and why would I want it?

ICANN, the international governing body for domain names, requires every Domain Registrar to maintain a publicly accessible "WHOIS" database displaying all contact information for all domain names registered. Failure to provide complete or accurate such information could result in the deletion of your domain name from the Domain Registry. They required this so that legal authorities can find you if they have a need.
Why should this concern you?

Unfortunately for all of the honest domain name owners, spammers, hackers, scammers and annoying tele-sales companies can see all the information that you have legally registered with the WHOIS database as well. Now you know why you get those annoying calls from people who just want to take your credit card information over the phone and why you get hundreds of spam messages every day.

What you can do about it:

If you are a new hosting customer you will get an email asking you to confirm that your want Whois privacy added to your account.  If you are a current hosting customer and would like Whois privacy added to your account, simply, request that WHOIS privacy be enabled on your domain name! That way if a legitimate authority wants to find you, they must prove to the privacy provider that they are legitimate and have a need to contact you.

How Much does it cost?

ADWH does not charge for WHOIS Privacy at this time. If the cost to us ever changes, then we will start charging for it, but we would rather your experience be without harassment than charge for something that costs us so little at this time.
